New toy

Postby SCCA on Tue Oct 20, 2009 4:31 am

Since my girlfriend decided to dump me, I thought I would satisfy a dream I have had for a while, but thought was a gonner because my ex didn't like them. Ya Softail, it's not an HD, but it's still something I needed

I pick it up next weekend, no time this weekend to get the trailer in service. It's in fantastic shape for an 85. Hopefully it wont cost me a bundle to fix up. I don't see but a few issues, all small.
Enjoy,

Looks pretty clean for an '85!!!!

They are excellent highway cruisers.... Saw one of these at the Marriot in Phoenix two weeks ago. They are HUGE! ;-)

The nice thing is....you can probably find another girl to hop in that back seat pretty easy! LOL.

We will definitely have to hook up for a ride to an Air Show somewhere next Summer.

That'll give the rest of the 613th time to ge their scoot's too ;-)

Ride Safe Brother!

Sounds great softail. My only issue would be my geriatric dog. I can't leave her for long, her bladder isn't what it used to be. A day trip through the shenandoah would be out of the question though....

It does appear to be in very good shape. All the plastic and chrome looks quite nice, with only some sun fade on the trip computer etc. I have to fix the radio screen, it's all jacked up due to UV damage. A little sanding and polishing should do the trick.

The rear brakes suxer (I think they need a bleed), and the left ft fork seal is weeping. I will address those in the spring.

It will take a bit to get comfortable again, it's been 20 years since I road. It will be fun.

Sounds like just some rubber seals need some work. Did the guy have maintenance records on it?

If not...I would replace ALL the fluids....brake, fork, oil, tranny, drain the gas if she's been sitting long.

There are a lot of "after-maket" mfgs around for windscreens and such. Check with Memphis Shades and see if they make a replacement. The plastic is cheap (under $100 ... its the mounts that usually cost a ton.)

Speedo's are everywhere...but it might be a bit tougher if its a cable-driven speedo. Even HD went the way of EFI and computer control a in 2006. Now you cant buy a new HD with a carb!

Keep us posted on the progress....Im sure your probably gonna add some performance....errr...enhancements LOL! ;-)

Nice bike SCCA. Looks like alot of fun. And you could always ad a side car for your dog. I bet she would love the fresh air once she gets used to it. I know my dogs love windows in cars so a sidecar might be heaven. :D

LOL Eld... No side car or me...

Well, I got the new machine home. After unloading it, the rain stopped so I took it up to the gas station to fill-er-up. The brakes seemed to be a little soft when I test drove it, but I figured they just needed to be worked a little. I decided to get into looking at it closely in the A.M.

Woke up early and as soon as the light and the temp agreed, I started looking it over. I pulled one of the saddle bags to get to the rear brakes. Okay, low, but enough pad material to make me happy. I put some clean fluid in the foot pedal master cylinder and bleed the rear. I found out that the foot pedal also works one of the two discs on the front as well as the rear. So I checked the ft pads linked to the foot brake and found problem 1. The inboard pad was worn at about a 10 deg angle. It seems a poor installation caused the pad to bind. Well, that's a problem. I also think that the foot master cylinder needs an overhaul, so no big ride today I think. I also had to pull the rear tire off because I broke the brittle valve stem off while checking the air (DOH!). Glad I found it now.

Gonna freshen up the plugs, fluids and filters next week. I hate that all the local M/C shops are closed on Sunday and Mondays, no parts till Tuesday.
Enjoy,

Looks awsome...Glad to hear your addressing the brakes. Stopping is important. I hope you get her road worthy soon and can hit the road. :laughing6:

Scca,

You should look at some of these for the dog:

http://www.beastriders.com/

I've seen these on a few bikes. One woman takes her old 70+ pound Samoyed with her on the Hog!

Just a thought.....why leave the best friend behind eh?
